    System Requirements and Compatibility

  1. Computer System Requirements - What are the system requirements for Genealogy Browser™?

    • Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 operating system
    • Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape web browser
    • 300 MHz processor
    • 128 MB of RAM
    • An Internet connection speed of at least 56Kbps
    • 2 MB of Hard drive space

      You may be able to run Genealogy Browser with a computer that does not meet these specifications; however, it is not recommended.

  2. Operating System - What operating systems are compatible with Genealogy Browser™?

     Genealogy Browser is compatible with the following versions of Microsoft operating systems:

        Windows XP

        Windows Vista

        Windows 2000

        Windows 2003

    Genealogy Browser is not compatible with MAC OS, WebTV, or UNIX based operating systems (i.e. Linux); however, some MAC OS users may be able to run Genealogy BrowserT with Virtual PC and some Linux users may be able to run Genealogy Browser; with CrossOver Office or the free-release Wine software.

    You may also use our service on our free web-based version called the Tree-shifter view. This is a smaller, limited version of the Genealogy Browser program.

  3. Web Browser - What web browsers are compatible with Genealogy Browser™?

     Genealogy Browser is compatible with the following web browsers:

        Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher (Preferred)

        Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher (Preferred)
        Netscape 4.0 or higher

        Google Chrome

        (AOL and EarthLink browsers built on these technologies are also compatible.)

    Because Genealogy BrowserT relies on some of the functions packed with Internet Explorer, all OneGreatFamily members must have Internet Explorer 4.0 (or higher) installed on their computer.

    For Internet Explorer users:

    Your security settings must allow ActiveX controls to run. To edit your security settings, in the Tools menu, select Internet Options and then open the Security tab. (If you are not sure how to allow ActiveX controls, click on Default Level, set your level to Medium or lower, and click Apply.)     If you are using Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2, you can run Genealogy Browser, but may experience the error 12002 while performing some operations.

    For Mozilla Firefox and Netscape users:

    You must download and install the Netscape/Firefox plug-in in order to run Genealogy BrowserT. If you are using Netscape or Firefox and were not prompted to download the plug-in, please click here.

  4. Firewall - Will my personal firewall software prevent Genealogy Browser from launching?

    Some personal firewall software will prevent Genealogy Browser from accessing the Internet. If you are receiving error 12029, this is most likely the cause. In order to run Genealogy Browser, you must allow it permission through any personal firewall software that you are running. If you do not know how to do this, we suggest contacting your firewall software customer support team.

    For Norton Internet Security users:

    Please follow the steps below in order to allow Genealogy BrowserT access to the Internet: 

    1. Open Norton Internet Security and click on Personal Firewall.
    2. Click on Configure. (If you are running NIS 2003, skip this step.)
    3. Click on the Programs tab.
    4. Change the policy for any programs labeled OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser or Z.EXE to "Permit All".
    5. Click on OK.  

    For McAfee Security Center users:

    If you are using McAfee Security Center, please follow these steps in order to allow Genealogy BrowserT access to the Internet.  

    1. Open McAfee Security Center and click on Personal Firewall. (If you are not sure how to open McAfee, double click on the red or black box with the white M in it, located near the clock in your system tray.)
    2. Under "I want to..." click on "view the firewall summary."
    3. In the new window that appears, under Internet Applications, change the permissions settings to "Allow full access" for any programs labeled OneGreatFamily® Genealogy Browser or Z.EXE.

     For Windows Firewall users:

    If you are using Windows Firewall, please follow the steps below in order to allow Genealogy BrowserT access to the Internet:  

    1. Open Windows Firewall (On your Start Menu, select Control Panel; open the Security section and then Windows Firewall.)
    2. Click on Add Program.
    3. Click on Browse, and then in the "Look In" field, navigate to the Local disk C: (your C drive.)
    4. Open the Program Files and then OGF folder in the C drive.
    5. Click on the Z file and then Open.
    6. Click on Ok on both the "Add a Program" and "Windows Firewall" boxes.

  5. Anti-virus - Will my anti-virus software prevent Genealogy Browser™ from launching

    Genealogy Browser™ needs to access the Internet. Some anti-virus software will prevent this because it does not recognize the program. If you are running anti-virus software and Genealogy Browser will not load, please configure your software to allow Genealogy Browser™ access to the Internet.

  6. Proxy Server - Will a proxy server prevent Genealogy Browser™ from launching

    You may experience problems launching Genealogy Browser™ if a proxy server is being used. If you are receiving error 80016 or 12152, this is most likely the cause.

    To correct this problem, you will need to edit the Z.ini file saved in your C:\WINDOWS folder. This will not harm your computer or affect other programs. This file is specific to Genealogy Browser™. Place the following two lines at the bottom of the file and then save it.

    [Settings]
    proxy=0

    (If you already have the [Settings] line, simply place the proxy=0 line below it.)

    If the problem persists after this, please check to see if you have any type of accelerator program on your computer, as this may interfere as well. If after the above adjustments are made and you still get error 80016, turn off your accelerator program.

  9. Plug-in - What is a plug-in?

    A Plug-in is software that extends the capabilities of your browser. If you are using Netscape or Mozilla Firefox, you will need to install a plug-in in order to run Genealogy Browser™.

  10. Computer Rights - Will my computer rights affect my ability to download Genealogy Browser™?

    In order to download Genealogy BrowserT, you must be logged into your computer with an account that has the rights to download and install programs. If you are using a restricted use account on your computer, you should login with an Administrator account or contact your computer administrator in order to run Genealogy BrowserT.
